England Basketball's Executive Board recommended on Tuesday 19 June that: "with the best long-term interests of women's basketball in mind the 2012/13 national women's 1st division competition should comprise of ten teams".
A decision was made two years ago that the women's top division would consist of eight teams for at least three years in an effort to improve the standard. It was decided that this improvement has occurred sooner than expected and this increase to ten teams is now justified. There will be an assessment during and immediately following the next season (2012/13) to see whether this is the case.
The Board also recommended that Loughborough Student Riders be one of the two teams added with a further team yet to be confirmed.
