The North East Region recently hosted two fantastic days of basketball at their FIBA U14 Girls festivals held at Unity City Academy in Middlesborough.
The festivals saw 89 girls aged 9-14 get involved, with the Region hosting a "rookie" come and try day for first time participants on Friday 18 May, followed by a competitive event for more experienced players on Saturday 26 May. The rookie event was won by Team UCA & Pallister Park Primary, while Tees Valley Mohawks were the victors the following weekend.
The event was supported by 16 young leaders from Unity City Academy, all young girls passionate about sport, who volunteered their time to officiate and organise the running of the festivals.
North East Regional Chair Howard Leighton was ecstatic with the success of the day, "Two great festivals of fun and enjoyment, where some great basketball was played! It was great to see loads of new young girls playing for the first time, and outstanding leadership was shown by our young leaders; who were all UCA students. They did a fantastic job in running the event; great to see an all-girls leadership team supporting younger girls by providing this opportunity!"
Team UCA & Pallister Park Primary and Tees Valley Mohawks will now look forward to representing the North East regional at the upcoming FIBA U14 Girls 3x3 National Celebration event in Manchester on Saturday 16 June.
