Haringey proceeded to stage III of the European Youth Basketball League (EYBL) Central Division after dominating stages I and II with an impressive 8 - 0 record.
Team Haringey have taken down strong opponents from Finland, Italy, Hungary and Estonia during their campaign to date and the 3rd stage will be held in Pecs, Hungary at the end of March where Haringey are hoping to continue their winning ways against competition from Group A.
Success in stage III could put Haringey into the SuperFinals in Hungary, where they would be within touching distance of an EYBL title.
Haringey players understandably feature heavily in the EYBL stats leader boards after eight games, with Alex Distras (28.38ppg) #1 in scoring, and Ndewedo Newbury (23.88ppg) is #2. Newbury is also 2nd in rebounding (12.88rpg), whilst Distras is 5th for assists (4.13apg). Both players feature highly in the efficiency rating, with Newbury #1 (30.0eff), Distras #8 (21.1eff) and Owen Young #18 (16.5eff).
The output for all three players is no accident, with Haringey lighting up the competition so far. Distras was selected to the EYBL All Star 5 for Stage II as the Hawks captain was tremendous throughout, consistently demonstrating his ability to get to the rim, knock down deep threes and make plays for his teammates. His standout performances included back-to-back 40+ point games, with 43 points against Pallacanestro Coleferro and 42 points against Next Step Academy.
Newbury also displayed his all round skill set as he won league MVP in both stages after putting up big numbers all tournament, including a 34 point, 18 rebound game against HNMKY Helsinki.
All Star 5 selection from Stage I Owen Young has also played key role for Haringey with his sharp shooting, including a 42 point effort that included eight threes earlier in the tournament.
For now, Haringey are excitedly waiting to see what stage III will bring and how far they can go in the competition.
