MPs set to debate Basketball, and we need your help!

The purpose of this communication is to alert you to an MP debate relating to basketball at Westminster Hall on 20 February 2018. We ask for your support in communicating with your local MP to attend the debate to help the sport progress.

The Westminster debate has been stimulated by the three home nation basketball bodies of England, Wales and Scotland, and the British Basketball Federation (BBF) in conjunction with the All Party Parliamentary Group (APPG) for Basketball.

The key message for your local MP is to encourage attendance at the debate and contribute to creating an awareness that basketball as a sport has immense community value. The work undertaken by you, our members and clubs, within your communities deserves recognition and support

To help you when speaking to your MP to promote the sport, highlight your work within the game and discuss what is currently happening, here are some significant points on participation that may be of use:

  • Basketball is the third biggest team sport after cricket and football
  • 306,400 people aged 16+ play the sport at least twice a month, 1 in 4 teenagers play at least once a month and we are very successful in making the sport accessible to people with disabilities.
  • Over 55% of people within the sport are from black and ethnic communities
  • 17% of Basketball England members are located in the 20% most deprived wards in the country.
  • The culture and appeal of basketball means that the sport connects to a massive range of people, regardless of age, gender or background. This is something few other sports can do.

The overall objective of Tuesday's debate is to generate more awareness of the sport's benefit to society and get more recognition from Government that the sport needs more funding support at all levels. At this time, the BBF does not receive any UK Sport funding to support the GB teams and this is a major challenge for the sport going forward.

From a Basketball England perspective, we have received tremendous support from Sport England to help grow the game. Any additional recognition, resources and support from other sources would really help support the community game even more.

By clicking the "Info For Your MP" button below, you can access some information on Basketball England's core programmes. Please reach out to your MP and share that information with them, encourage their attendance at Tuesday's debate and inform them of the tremendous local work you are undertaking.

Finally, I thought I would take this opportunity to thank you for your continued support for our great game and helping to move the sport forward. Our volunteer base continues to do amazing things at local, regional and national levels and without this the sport would not function. At a local level, we had huge volunteer support to help deliver the NBL and WNBL National Cup Finals. The event was one of the most successful in the competition's recent history and led to two great games, with the Women's game a particular highlight. At the national level we are now preparing our men’s and women’s squads to compete for a medal in the Commonwealth Games in April. We will be running lots of stories about basketball in connection with the Games and seeking to attract more people into the game whilst we have the sport in a spotlight . I hope this will have an impact on enquiry levels at your club and you are able to see an increase in the number of people wanting to get involved.

Thank you,

Stewart Kellett
