With both NBL and WNBL Division 2 competitions yet to get underway, there are three Player of the Week awards up for grabs in week 1, covering the 28/29 September. Congratulations to all three winners from across the NBL.
Week 1’s recipient is Stoke-on-Trent Knight’s Kieran Jones after an impressive performance in the Midlands Conference to kick off the season.
Jones helped his side to a comfortable 81-67 home win over Mansfield Giants, dropping a game high 31 points in the process.
“I really appreciate the acknowledgement from Basketball England,” said Jones. “It’s nice to know that your hard work over the summer has been recognised and so early on in the season, it gives me and my teammates a great feeling moving forward.”
After putting up some serious numbers to help ARU overcome a dogged Thames Valley Cavaliers side 86-70, reigning playoff final MVP Katrin Hulme is the WNBL D1 Player of the Week.
After providing a useful boost to her side with 19 points, Hulme also fell just short of recording a rare triple-double, pulling down nine rebounds to go with nine steals. It was a do it all performance and one that was worthy of recognition.
“It was awesome to get back on court with the girls and it was great to start as we mean to go on!” exclaimed Hulme. “There are lots of things for us to improve so I’m looking forward to building on pre-season and the weekend’s game as the season gets going.”
After a highly impressive senior NBL debut for Worthing Thunder, teenager Cameron Hildreth is the NBL D1 Player of the Week.
Hildreth put Barking Abbey to the sword as his side secured a 103-75 win, taking the plaudits for his 30 points, 11 rebounds, two assists, two steals and one block stat line. For such a young talent, the GB age-group star showed poise and ability well beyond his years and for that he’s been named our Player of the Week.
“I really appreciate this acknowledgement so early in the season,” said Hildreth. “It’s such a surprise as obviously all I care about is winning. The guys are really supportive and giving me the opportunity to just play. I’m really excited to see what this team can do and the advice from Alex, Zaire and Tom I feel is already really helping my game.”
