Both sides would have been itching to get back on the court in 2021 after a disruptive 2020. Barking made their first appearance since November while the visitors were back in action for the first time since the opening weekend.
You would forgive either side for showing signs of rust given their limited minutes on the floor, but the hosts went big in their new year opener.
Abiodun Adedo (18 points, 7 rebounds) led the way for Barking along with Cem Uner bringing 16 from the bench, while the Rebels' Joshua Moore led the scoring with a 22-point haul to put in a strong performance, albeit in defeat.
This fixture seems to bring the best out of these sides as another hotly contested D1M showdown brought more late drama, once again in favour of Team Newcastle.
Just as he did in the 77-74 win at the end of 2020, Brandon Federici once again stepped up with the game winner at Loughborough to continue the promoted side's impressive start to the season.
Federici's 20-point game was bettered only by teammate Ronald Blain (29) and the hosts' Jonas Dieterich (25), while Kyle Jimenez's 14-point, 12-assist double-double helped produce another brilliant close fought contest to begin the year.

Worthing Thunder moved into the last four of the L Lynch Trophy after seeing off Derby in Sunday's quarter-final match-up.
There were impressive double-double performances from Thunder's Max Richardson (23 points, 11 rebounds) and Derby's Oliver Stanley (20 points, 15 rebounds), while Malcolm Smith's 22-point showing made for a quarter-final calibre performance.
Richardson's performance from the bench helped make the difference, making up a chunk of the 41 points from outside the starting five that send Thunder into a semi-final slot.
