Statement from Team Birmingham Elite

Basketball England is deeply saddened to learn of the recent medical developments regarding Team Birmingham Elite’s Owner and Head Coach Nigel Hanson.

The well-known and successful coach suffered a stroke whilst coaching his under 18 men’s side to a Jnr. NBL Playoff quarter-final win against London United this weekend, and he remains in a hospital at the present time.

All at Basketball England would like to pass on our well wishes to Nigel for a quick and full recovery, and offer our support to his family and the club as a whole at this time.

Club statement:

Club Owner and Head Coach of Team Birmingham Elite Nigel Hanson suffered a stroke on Sunday 22nd April 2018 after the club’s Under 18 Men’s quarter-final win against London United at our home venue in Birmingham.

He is currently in hospital undergoing a series of assessments and tests to ascertain the extent of the stroke.

The club management are ensuring that the basketball continues with the same passion and professionalism that Nigel expects throughout the club, including at the Final Fours on the 5 and 6 May 2018 in Manchester.

We are sure everyone in the basketball community would want to extend the best wishes at this time for a full and speedy recovery.
