West Herts Warriors female Satellite Club basketball session at Queens School has been awarded the Sport England East region Satellite Club of the Year award.
The Satellite Club basketball session has attracted more than 50 females aged 11-18 to regularly participate in fun based weekly basketball sessions, over the past school year. West Herts Warriors key focus has been to attract more females to the sport and bridge the gap between school and club basketball!
Satellite clubs are extensions of community sports clubs, which use different venues such as a secondary schools or colleges to offer a range of sports to young people who may not be regularly active, or lack the confidence to join a sports club.
The idea of satellite clubs is for our own community basketball clubs to deliver fun and informal basketball sessions. Satellite clubs have an open door policy to attract as many participants to the sport as possible. Specialist coaches from our basketball programmes make sessions as relaxed as possible whilst ensuring participants personal and playing skills are developing too.
West Herts Warriors have won the award ahead of a host of Satellite Club based sports including football, boxing, table tennis and rugby, which really shows the hard work and dedication from the club.
Satellite Club Officer, Taner Adu, commented:
‘We are extremely pleased to hear that West Hertfordshire Warriors have been recognised by Sport England and Herts Sports Partnership, for all the hard work they have put into the Satellite Club programme this past year. More importantly it is great that it is actually an all girls Satellite Club that has won the award, as female participation is a key focus for Basketball England this year on the Satellite Club programme. On behalf of Basketball England I would like to say thank you, congratulations and keep up the good work!’
Basketball England would like to congratulate and thank West Herts Warriors for their continued efforts on the Satellite club programme and wish them the best of luck for the up and coming season.
