THEORY MODULES

The course consists of various online modules which you can complete in your own time.

The modules include:

  • The Basics of Refereeing
  • Game Administration
  • Mechanics - Lead & Trail
  • Violations & Signalling
  • Fouls & Signalling

The theory modules are always available to you as a learner to refer to during your formative years as a referee.

Practical Learning Session

You are required to attend a 3-hour practical learning session organised by Basketball England which will be delivered by a BE approved Referee Tutor.

The practical learning session is an on-court session that will bring the theory to life as the tutor will work through the different aspects of the game. This will include game mechanics, play calling, fouls and violations.

When attending the practical learning session the learner will need to bring with them:

  • A pealess whistle with a lanyard - available HERE
  • Sportswear and trainers
  • Food and refreshments

Once you have signed up for the course you will be able to view the booking form with upcoming dates for the practical sessions.

Once you have completed the course you are ready to referee some games. Learners should start their officiating with lower level games in the first instance - junior central venue league games and local recreational level is perfect practice and a great training ground for new starters.

Before refereeing any games you are required to sign-up to the Basketball England Membership portal and pay for a referee licence. If you are over 16 you will require a DBS check and to complete a safeguarding self-declaration. If you are over 18 you require both of these and in addition a safeguarding qualification. All the information you need to license as an official can be found here.

Completing The Qualification

Upon completion of the online modules and attending the 3-hour practical learning session, the candidate will receive an e-certificate.
