A moment years in the making - Jonathan Brown embraces his first taste of senior GB basketball

“It’s insane to me,” he says. “Honestly, the stuff of dreams.”

For Brown, this is more than just a training camp. It’s validation of a journey that has demanded patience, self-belief and a willingness to bet on himself when the pathway ahead wasn’t clear.

As GB prepare for back-to-back clashes against Italy - at home in Newcastle on February 27 and away in Livorno on March 2 - Brown finds himself standing closer than ever to the senior international stage.

Whether he ultimately makes the final 12 for either game remains to be seen. For now, he’s part of the extended camp roster, soaking in everything that comes with his first experience at this level - and loving every second of it.

A message that changed everything

The moment itself was simple; a text message. But the meaning behind it was anything but.

“I was super excited,” Brown said. “When I got the text from Dan [Clark, General Manager], I was reflecting on how I’d finally made it to a situation I’ve been dreaming about for a while.”

It’s a dream that once felt distant.

“If you told me five or six years ago this would be happening now, I’d have called you a liar,” he admitted. “It wasn’t on the radar.”

At that point in his career, Brown was stuck - not unhappy, but unfulfilled.

“I wasn’t playing as much as I wanted,” he said. “I didn’t know how I could ever aspire to something bigger.”

What he did have, though, was an unwavering desire to change his circumstances.

“I knew I had to get out of that situation and build something better for myself,” Brown said. “To have achieved that is incredible.”

From football boots to basketball dreams

Basketball wasn’t always the plan. In fact, it wasn’t even the first love.

“I played football up until I was about 14,” Brown explained. “Once I stopped playing for my club, I picked up basketball.”

That decision would quietly shape the rest of his life.

His early development came under the guidance of Alan Keane at Lampton Academy, where Brown spent two and a half years immediately after secondary school. From there, he moved on to Canterbury High before earning a place at Barking Abbey - a breeding ground for elite British talent.

“That period was huge for me,” Brown reflected. “Every step taught me something different about the game and about myself.”

Eventually, his journey took him across the Atlantic, beginning what he describes as his ‘American escapade’. It was a leap of faith, one that tested him in new environments and forced him to grow - not just as a player, but as a person.

Coming home - and thriving

This season, Brown made another significant decision: returning home to play in Super League Basketball with the Bristol Flyers.

“It’s been amazing to be home,” he said. “I’ve been gone for about seven years, so to be back in England and have my people come and watch me play every week has been so special.”

For Brown, the move has been about more than comfort - it’s been about fit.

“Bristol have a great track record with British players,” he explained, pointing to Jelani Watson-Gayle on the GB current roster and Evan Walshe’s impact in previous seasons. “That really excited me.”

So too did the style of play.

“Super League Basketball suits my game,” Brown said. “I’m an up-and-down player, I love being active on both ends of the floor, and the league is very transition-based.”

It’s allowed him to show his versatility.

“I’ve proven I can change the game quickly,” he added. “I can start, come off the bench, and make a difference.”

Those performances haven’t gone unnoticed and they’ve helped put him firmly on the national team radar.

First camp, instant connection

Despite being only two days into camp, Brown already feels at home.

“Camp has been fantastic,” he said. “I’ve heard from others about how good the experiences are, and mine has been exactly the same.”

There’s no sense of hierarchy or distance — just shared purpose.

“I feel like I’ve slotted in really well,” Brown explained. “Like I’ve been part of the family for ages.”

That environment has helped ease the nerves that inevitably come with a first call-up.

“Everybody here is a good person,” he said. “That makes a huge difference.”

He’s also relishing the chance to work under head coach Marc Steutel.

“Marc is a very passionate and engaging coach,” Brown said. “I’m really enjoying working with him.”

The challenge ahead

The scale of the task facing GB this window is clear. The group - which also includes Lithuania and Iceland - is finely balanced, with all four teams sitting at 1–1 in the standings.

That makes these two games against Italy especially significant.

“They’re one of the best teams in the world,” Brown said. “Their fans are passionate, just like ours.”

The idea that he might step onto the floor against them still feels surreal.

“The possibility of making my senior debut is insane,” he admitted. “If I get the call to pull on that jersey, it’s going to be something I’ll never forget.”

But whether his opportunity comes now or later, Brown’s focus is firmly on the collective.

“I know whatever happens, this group is going to give everything to get two wins,” he said.

Built, not given

Brown’s journey isn’t one of overnight success. It’s been built deliberately, patiently, and often quietly - through difficult decisions, long stretches away from home, and a refusal to settle for less than he believed he was capable of.

Now, standing on the brink of senior international basketball, he’s not looking too far ahead.

“I’m just grateful to be here,” he said.

Grateful - and ready.

Whether his debut comes in Newcastle, Livorno, or further down the line, one thing is already clear, Jonathan Brown belongs in this conversation. And for a player who once couldn’t see a path to something bigger, that in itself is a powerful win - for him, and for British basketball alike.
