Amari Williams set for first Senior Great Britain appearance ahead of EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers
Great Britain Basketball is delighted to confirm Amari Williams will join the senior men's team for the first time ahead of the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window.
The Boston Celtics centre joins Marc Steutel's squad after an impressive rise through the collegiate and professional ranks, including an initial stop with Myerscough in the EABL.
Having enjoyed a standout college career in the United States, Williams signed with the NBA's Boston Celtics last summer and now takes the next step in his international journey by joining his first senior Great Britain camp.
Although this marks his senior debut, Williams is no stranger to the Great Britain programme, having represented his country at youth level.
After seven years away from the national team set-up, the 23-year-old will now reunite with several former team-mates as Great Britain prepares to face Switzerland away before hosting Slovakia in Newcastle on August 30 (5pm) at the Vertu Arena.
Williams said: "When I realised this summer I would have the opportunity to join the programme I was very excited. I haven't been able to play for the National Team for seven years so to be able to come back and meet everybody and see guys I grew up playing with is going to be very exciting.
"I've wanted to be involved throughout that time, but the timing has never fallen right to allow that to happen until now. I've got a lot of close friends on the roster so I'm excited to reconnect with them and compete for our country together.
"Dan and I have talked a lot over the last few years. We've always been in communication and he reaches out regularly to see how I'm doing, what's going on, to congratulate me on things happening in my life, and he's always told me when it's possible for me he wants me here. I'm glad to finally have the opportunity to come in and I'm excited."
Great Britain Head Coach Marc Steutel said: "We're excited to have Amari in the programme. He is someone whose career is going in a direction that everybody in British basketball is very proud of, and somebody who has always shown a deep desire to play national team basketball.
"The timing is a boost for us and we're really excited to get him into camp and up to speed, putting together our most competitive group for this window.
"Amari is a very exciting talent. He fits our style of play exceptionally well, so everybody in Great Britain Basketball is looking forward to seeing him in camp and making his senior national team debut."
The news comes shortly after it was confirmed Tosan Evbuomwan will also join the senior national team having established himself as one of Britain's most successful players on the global stage.
Great Britain will travel to Switzerland for the opening game of the EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window before returning to Newcastle to host Slovakia.
The remainder of Steutel's squad for the August FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window will be announced over the coming days.
