ANNOUNCEMENT - England U18/U17 Men’s and Women’s Squad Announced Following Regional Development Tournament

  • All 10 Basketball England regions represented during the U17 Regional Development Tournament, with 240 players taking part
  • A total of 58 players selected for National U18/U17 Squads
  • Local clubs and coaches recognised for their talent contribution

Following the U17 boy's and girl's Regional Development Tournament in Manchester on the 9 / 10 September, the initial rosters for the England U18 Men's and Women’s National Squad and England U17’s Men’s and Women’s National Development Programme have been announced.

120 boys and 120 girls from each of the 10 Basketball England regions took part in the Regional Development Tournament. Players were observed and assessed during the event which took place at the National Basketball Performance Centre, Manchester.

Alan Keane GB U18 men's Head Coach said “A lot of credit must go to the parents, coaches and players who committed their time, energy, effort and resources in the build up to the tournament. It was a very enjoyable two days observing players and teams who all gave an excellent account of themselves. I am excited by the potential within many players I saw play throughout the tournament. However, I must emphasise that the commitment to getting better, the sacrifices that need to be made, the improvements that we would like to see by Christmas camp are now more necessary than ever. We are striving to do well in Division A and that is most achievable by what players will do between now and the first national team camp and beyond. Finally thank you to Basketball England for their continued hard work with the RDT”.

Vanessa Ellis GB U18 women’s Head Coach said “It was good to watch the players at the U17 Regional Development Tournament. It is important for us to see the players compete and play in games."

38 boys and 20 girls have been selected for the England squads and they will take part in their first national camp in Manchester in December.

Basketball England's Talent Development & Performance Manager Vladan Dragosavac said “Congratulations to all players and their coaches on selection to the England National Teams programmes. The Regional Development Tournament was a great opportunity for all players to show what they could do and perform at their best. Today's announcement marks a great moment for the clubs who have nurtured this talent and helped them to progress and represent their region before achieving England squad selection."

"This summer all the GB youth national teams performed well in the European Championships with two teams gaining promotion up to Division A next season. Over 90% of the players and staff from those teams were from the English talent pathway and we are pleased to have identified players here who can continue this trend and compete with the best in Europe. The camp due to take place in December will help coaches to select players for U18 England National programme. Those players can then be considered for the Great Britain U18 programmes and European Championships in 2018. England's National Development Programmes for U17 and U15 players will continue to operate and support player development."

"Also being considered for the December camp are any players who were not available to attend the RDT due to injury, school/club commitments or are abroad. These players will be assessed by National Team coaching staff through their competitions throughout the season along with communication with their club coaches."
