GB programmes eyeing 2027 World University Games

Held in Chungcheong, South Korea on 1-12 August 2027, work has begun to ensure that two GB sides take to the court at the prestigious international tournament.

Applications for the event are currently under review and if successful , the teams will be part of the British Universities & Colleges Sport (BUCS) team delegation to the games. 

The programme is a partnership between the Talented Athlete Scholarship Scheme (TASS) and the Hoopsfix Foundation, and has the approval of the interim delivery group overseeing the Great Britain programmes until a new British governing body is established.

Preparations for the men's side starts this week and will be managed by Great Britain Senior Men's General Manager Dan Clark, while the women's programme will begin preparations later in the summer.

Lloyd Gardner, Head Coach of Surrey 89ers, former GB Under-20 Head Coach and GB Senior Men’s assistant, will lead the men's team during the first camp as Head Coach.

Clarke said: "There's a real depth of British talent playing university basketball, both at home and abroad, and the World University Games gives us a platform to bring that group together, compete at a high level, and build something for the future."

The first identification camp will take place 19-21 May 2026 at the University of Westminster, London. The camp will serve as an initial touch point for coaches to assess players and make contact with prospects ahead of next summer's selection process.

A second camp is planned for end of June, with players expected to travel to Paris for an exhibition fixture as part of the build-up.

The initial training camp features a number of the country's top young players, including EABL all-time leading scorer and 2019/20 MVP Blake Bowman, 2023/24 EABL South MVP Tim Oboh, and 2024/25 EABL winner and two-time Defensive Player of the Year Amarlie Wilkinson.

To be considered for selection, players must be British citizens aged 18 or over, and no older than 25 on 31 December 2027.

They must also be currently enrolled at a recognised higher education institution pursuing a degree or diploma, or have competed in such a programme in the year of the Games or the preceding year.
