The majority of players that the research team spoke to in the study were not aware of the options to study at university and play basketball within the UK. That included youth level players (age group 11-15 and 16-19) and older players who had chosen the American route. To address this lack of awareness, the research team surveyed various universities and sought information about their support and sport scholarships that are available to basketball players.

Below is a detailed list of UK Universities that offer performance basketball programmes – this includes details of scholarships that are available:

Anglia Ruskin University +

Are there basketball specific coaches or staff?

  • One full time member of staff who oversees the whole performance programme, head coaches for the men’s basketball programme, and a second part-time member of coaching staff who is the women’s basketball head coach.

What is the basketball scholarship criteria?

  • Coaching staff evaluate players on a case-by-case basis, looking at: previous playing experience, consistent high performance levels within the programme, national team status and experience, NAIA and NCAA college experience, EABL and WEABL experience and attributes such as height, athleticism, personal qualities and leadership experience.

What is the basketball scholarship criteria?

  • The scholarship is offered to both undergraduates and post graduate students. It is awarded in three tiers, Bronze £1,000, Silver £2,500 and Gold £5,500 per year.

    In order to be eligible for the scholarship, individuals must meet the following requirements:

What is the basketball scholarship criteria?

  • A specialist sports panel, including basketball coaching staff, review scholarship applications on an individual applicant basis and will consider both previous playing experience as well as future aspirations. Applicants are required to submit video footage and provide a supporting reference alongside their application. The current criteria can be seen below.

    • Dual Career Scholarship Student: Senior national team; U20’s National team; Men’s BBL playing experience, or Men’s division 1/National league play offs playing experience.
    • Performance Potential: England or an equivalent standard country or have recent (within one year) U18 national team playing experience.  Men's division 2 may also be considered as well as EABL.
