NBL1 Recap: Week 12 (16/17 January 2021) - live streams, stats and more

Oaklands Wolves picked up back-to-back weekend wins for their first successes of the NBL1 season.

Solent Kestrels also recorded two victories, the first - over BA London Lions - stretched their 100% league record to five games, while the second - against Hemel Storm - earned them a semi-final spot in the L Lynch Trophy.

The Wolves, with new signing AJ Roberts in action, saw off Essex Rebels and Leicester Warriors, while Thames Valley Cavaliers, Derby Trailblazers, who claimed top spot, and Hemel Storm all picked up win on a busy weekend.

Wolves at the double

Wolves survived a late comeback from the Rebels to pick up their first victory of the campaign, returning from Essex Sports Arena with a 91-88 win on Saturday.

At the venue where Wolves' predecessors Leopards spent a season, Thomas Baker's young side were 11 up going into the final two minutes before showing some inexperience to set up a grandstand finish.

Jordan Santiago again the led the scoring, missing a triple-double by two assists with 32 points and 10 rebounds, going 10/11 at the foul line. AJ Roberts marked his return to the club he played for four years ago with 20 points and nine boards, while James Cummings added ten points and seven boards and Jerrell Layne finishing with nine points.

Wolves followed it up with a 108-101 home win over Leicester Warriors with 18-year-old Kane Daley racking up a game-high 30 points, Roberts claiming an 11/18 double double (and eight assists) and Santiago grabbing another 24 points.

Roberts was delighted with a successful first pair of games with the Wolves, saying: "It was a great weekend for us at Oaklands basketball," he said. "To go two for two this weekend was huge for us! Now it’s time to shift our focus and get ready for next weekend!"

Trailblazers go top

Derby Trailblazers completed their second league double of the season as they beat Leicester Warriors 89-67, despite having a somewhat depleted roster to call upon.

With regular starters in Josh Guddemi, Rema Lascelles, Malcolm Smith and Ronald Oberia missing, Blazers needed their youthful contingent to step up and take a bigger role in scoring and both Blake Bowman and Ash Ugo rose to that challenge with 28 and 22 points respectively.

Bowman added seven rebounds, five assists, two steals and a block, while Ugo completed a double-double, pulling down 11 rebounds, dishing out five assists and claiming two steals.

“We all know what Blake is capable of doing and it was great to see him rising to the challenge, getting to the basket and really making some great plays and some brilliant dunks. He also added some great assists too, so it was a pretty good day for him,” admitted the Trailblazers Head Coach Matt Shaw.

“Ash was also so tough at both ends. He defended really well and made things happen, as well as being an effective scorer both inside and out,” he added.

Elsewhere in D1M

Solent Kestrels enjoyed a double success, with Orlan Jackman's 23 points helping them to a commanding 109-75 win over BA London Lions  before they grabbed a semi final spot in the L Lynch Trophy at the expense of Hemel Storm the following day, sealing 88-68 win.

Storm did earn a big league win in Week 12, though, as danger men Gregory Poleon and Bode Adeluola hit 33 and 30 points respectively in a 119-89 W over Worthing Thunder.

Taylor Johnson posted 23 points on the road as Thames Valley Cavaliers beat Loughborough Riders 92-79.
