WNBL1 recap: Week 22 (27/28 March 2021) - live streams, stats and more

There were surprises aplenty across WNBL in a hugely entertaining week 22.

Leaders Ipswich went down at home against Nottingham Trent University, previously winless BA London Lions II picked up not one but two victories, and CoLA Southwark Pride took a hard-fought road win over third place Solent.

There's a recap of all the action below, and each result is also clickable if you wish to view the live stats.

NTU spring the upset

Ipswich (10-2) 55-67 Nottingham Trent University (5-6)

Nottingham Trent pulled off one of the upsets of the season, beating first place Ipswich 67-55 on the road.

Schekinah Bimpa's 26 points powered the surprise victory for mid-table NTU, with former Sheffield Hatters' duo Naomi Campbell (13pts) and Abbey Whitehouse (12pts) both providing support.

After falling behind by eight points early, the visitors then went on a run of their own to move ahead by 17 midway through the second.

Coach Waghorn's side would use that advantage to keep Ipswich at bay, with the difference never getting below five points as the hosts went 6/39 from beyond the arc.

Esther Little's 13-point, 13-rebound double-double would be in vain as Harriet Welham top-scored for her side with 20.

Elsewhere this weekend

BA London Lions (2-8) came into week 22 without a win, but grabbed two of them in as many days as they enjoyed a successful double-header weekend.

On Saturday, the Lions beat Thames Valley Cavaliers (3-6) 70-67 as the return of forward Leia Edwards sparked the London outfit to success.

Edwards enjoyed a team-high 17 points to help her side claim a tight game that was still tied with 2:37 remaining, with TVC's Katherine Goldsby putting up a 23-point, 10-rebound double-double in reply.

On Sunday, Edwards continued her successful return, piling up 16 points and seven rebounds as BA knocked off Cardiff Met Archers (1-6) 69-49.

Between Edwards' performance, a 19-8 second quarter and holding the dangerous Amber Deane to just six points, the Lions put all the pieces in place to claim another W.

Reading Rockets (5-6) added to Worcester's (4-7) woes as they handed the Wolves a sixth straight defeat, coming out on top 77-61.

Saioa San Francisco enjoyed a big day for the Rockets, shooting 8-10 from the field for 23 points, adding five boards, three assists and four steals to an impressive afternoon's work.

Finally, CoLA Southwark Pride (6-3) enjoyed a strong 63-57 win over Team Solent Kestrels (7-5).

Solent led for the vast majority of the game, though the visitors jumped out in front when it mattered, pulling out an 11-0 run over the final two minutes to claim victory on the road.

Simona Henshaw was in fine form for the visitors, putting together a 20-point, 11-rebound double-double.
