WNBL1 recap: Week 9 (27/28 November 2021) – live streams, stats and more

There were three games in D1W this weekend, with big wins for Reading, Bristol and Cardiff.

With the top five all out of action, that meant there was only movement to be made further down the standings as Cardiff took the opportunity to vault up to sixth spot.

There's a recap of the  action below, and each result is also clickable if you wish to view the live stats.

Nottingham Trent University (0-8) 49-54 Bristol Academy Flyers (3-5)

Bristol took another step towards a .500 record as they won 54-49 on the road in Nottingham.

The Flyers enjoyed a 12 point, five rebound, four steal performance from Hannah Wallace as Mai Zilbeti added 11 more and a trio of steals off the bench.

With the hosts leading by seven midway through the second, Bristol turned on the jets to flip the contest on its head. Eventually claiming the second frame 21-9, the Flyers' advantage passed into double digits during the third quarter.

The hosts did fight back down the stretch, reducing the deficit to as little as three points, but NTU were never able to find the telling basket to draw back level.

Ines Guerreiro's 11 point, 11 rebound double-double went with four assists and five steals, with Lilly Annim leading all scorers on 15 points as Nottingham's search for a first win of the season continues.

Elsewhere this weekend

Two other games took place this weekend, headlined by a statement road win for Cardiff Met Archers II (4-4) as they knocked off Team Solent Kestrels (3-4) 85-61.

After a 3-1 start, the Kestrels have now dropped three in a row, with 29 points from Amber Deane and 23 more from Denisa Molnar proving too much to overcome.

Solent did enjoy a stunning 30 point, 16 rebound double-double from Detti Balla, but it would be in vain for the hosts.

With no game since late October, Reading Rockets (2-4) have had to wait for their second win of the season but sealed it in style as they beat London Lions II (1-7) 79-72.

After erasing an early Reading lead, the Lions led for the majority of the contest before coming unstuck late thanks to a 15-2 run by the visitors.

Despite their continued struggles, Fatmata Janneh once again shone for the Lions to close with 38 points, 10 rebounds, four assists and four steals.

Jessie Ford top scored for the Rockets, she had 25 points, with captain Candela Hermida Nunez (19pts, 7ast) and Elena Matheson (15pts, 6reb, 7ast) both playing well in support.
