Take a bow - 2435 and counting for record scorer Georgia Anderson

The huge milestone was achieved on Sunday, 23 November, as Manchester Basketball lost 94-97 to Anderson’s old team, Leicester Riders, who she joined 12 years ago at the very start of her professional journey. 

“I’m proud that I could do it,” said Jones to SLBW commentator Caz Bullock in the post-game interview.  

“I’ve got a lot of respect for the people that set the record before me, Catt Carr, Helen Naylor. Just to be in the same category, I’m really proud of it.”

Most points, most assists, most steals

The 35-year-old has had an immeasurable impact on the British basketball scene, and her points record sidles nicely alongside her gongs for the player with the most assists and steals in the history of the women’s professional top flight. 

The daughter of British basketball legend Jeff Jones - who played for Manchester’s Giants and United teams and coached several professional men’s and women’s teams over the decades - and sister to professional players’ James and Callum, Anderson (neé Jones) has had a storied basketball career.  

At just 16, the Mancunian received her first cap for Great Britain, making her the youngest player ever to represent the national side, and finished her international duties on 68 caps, which included playing her part in a huge fourth-place finish at the 2019 FIBA Women’s EuroBasket, GB’s highest-ever finish – men’s or women’s – at a European tournament.  

For England, she helped the country win silver at the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games.

Easy not to relish in your achievements

Her club story started with the Manchester Mystics, before heading to play NCAA 1 in the States with Oral Roberts Golden Eagles, where she was the NCAA Summit League’s Newcomer of the Year award as a freshman and won back-to-back Summit League titles in 2009/10 and 2010/11.  

Then there were stints with Barking Abbey Leopards, Romania’s Cluj-Napoca, before joining the Riders.  

But Manchester has always had her heart and since 2016 has represented home-town clubs Manchester Mystics, Manchester Giants and now Manchester Basketball. 

In 2022, Anderson told Basketball England that ‘basketball players are always striving for the next thing and it’s sometimes easy not to relish in your achievements and milestones’. 

Many players, coaches, fans and media-alike have said how she has set the tone for basketball performance and Mystics’ founder Joe Forber described her dedication and ambition to basketball as ‘done with class and showing top standards in everything she does’. 

There’s no doubt that thousands of players in Britain have been inspired by her.  

“I don’t think you know your [impact] when you’re [playing],” added Anderson.  

“I think it’s something you can look back on and think ‘that’s pretty cool what I achieved’ and hope that people can look at it and take some inspiration.  

“I didn’t think I’d still be playing, I’m grateful that I can. My body is holding up so far. It’s been a journey, I’m grateful for all of it, the ups and downs. I just love it.”
