Dave Smoothy RIP - South West pioneer passes

As a player and official and in his later years as the Chair of the Exeter and District Basketball Association (EDBBA), Smoothy was highly-regarded by those that met him and his impact on the game in the South West was sizable.

A familiar face around Torbay, Newton Abbot and the Exeter League, Smoothy impact to transition the Association into the 'modern version' enjoyed today was credited in a post announcing his passing.

Exeter and District competition's secretary Rob Kingdon said:

"This is very sad news. Dave dedicated many decades to the game he loved, giving tirelessly of his time and expertise.

"As chair and official, he played a pivotal role in developing basketball across Exeter and District, nurturing talent, strengthening our leagues, and supporting countless players, coaches, and officials along the way, me included.

"His passion, commitment, and kindness have left a lasting legacy that will continue to shape the local basketball community for years to come. Rest in peace, Dave – you will be greatly missed."

Norman Waldron, who helped form Torbay Tigers in 1973, added:

"Dave was a true friend of Torbay Tigers as a referee and parent of Christian.

"He played a significant role in the growth of the club and also helped Churston Grammar School enormously.

"His legacy as Chair of EDBBA will live on."

Smoothy's funeral will be held on Saturday 9 May 2026 from 12pm, with a wake in Brixham following the service.
