Manchester basketball courts get fresh investment

Cringle Park will be the first of these projects and work is scheduled to begin in April, with an official opening planned for early May.  

BE has provided the project with technical guidance and funding for upgrades to basketball equipment.

MCR Active’s Head of Sport and Events Yarv Abbas said: 

“We have extensive plans for our public space and parks.

“Basketball is one of the sports we wish to improve the facilities of. We have football and tennis facilities that we’ve invested in and basketball fits alongside that.” 

The Council, MCR Active and Manchester Basketball have worked closely together since the new Manchester franchise was established in August 2024. 

President of Manchester Basketball Ben Pierson said: 

“Since launching the franchise, we’ve looked for ways to make a meaningful impact in the community. 

“We know the impact that investing in accessible, open facilities can have, and we have been developing plans to refurbish courts for nearly a year. This is about giving young people safe, high-quality spaces to play, and creating more opportunities to engage with the sport across the city. 

“Our men’s and women’s professional teams include players who grew up playing on courts like these. 

“Investing in community facilities is a key part of our long-term strategy to grow the game and increase participation across the city.” 

BE Outdoor Projects Lead Toby Wilkinson said: 

“We are excited to be supporting our partners in Manchester to deliver more outdoor spaces to play basketball.  

“BE played a key role in shortlisting and surveying sites for development in Manchester, eventually shaping the scope of the project and selecting Cringle Park. We’ve offered technical guidance throughout the project and made a strong financial contribution to ensure the new basketball equipment installed meets the highest standard for outdoor use."
