How the Movement Fund has pumped more than £1m into grassroots basketball
Basketball England has now helped distribute more than £1million from Sport England’s Movement Fund to boost grassroots basketball.
Since the fund was launched in 2024, BE has supported more than 100 affiliated organisations access awards of up to £15,000 to grow and support participation and deliver engaging community programmes.
The fund has enabled BE member clubs, leagues and associations remove barriers to participation and provide new opportunities to play and with basketball becoming the second-most funded sport from the £160m pot.
BE has assisted scores of clubs in developing and writing successful bids into the fund, with the opportunity to support more.
Female basketball projects boosted
A standout success of the Movement Fund has been its impact on the development of women and girls’ basketball.
More than £270,000 has been awarded to stand-alone female programmes, helping clubs to start new sessions and expand existing provision, supporting long-term pathways for female participants.
This targeted investment has already begun to increase opportunities for girls to engage with and enjoy basketball in friendly, welcoming environments.
BE has also support bids that have boosted officiating programmes and local leagues amongst a range of projects.
The Movement Fund’s priority is to support initiatives that attract new participants or re-engage those who have stopped playing and want to return to sport.

Nick Holloway, Basketball England's Club and Volunteers Development Manager, said:
“Working with our clubs and leagues to secure funding to get new people playing basketball is the most rewarding and enjoyable element of my role.
“I cannot speak highly enough of our club and league administrators for the time and effort they have put in - their dedication and passion for the game is the reason we have been so successful with accessing this fund.
“The resources from it have had a profound impact on the basketball community, and we encourage all our members to get in touch, book in a meeting and discuss what funding avenues are available.”
