Tosan Evbuomwan set for first Senior Great Britain call-up ahead of EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifiers
Great Britain Basketball is delighted to confirm that Tosan Evbuomwan will feature in his first-ever senior men's 5v5 camp later this month, with the Newcastle-born forward named in Marc Steutel's squad for the upcoming FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window.
Evbuomwan joins the senior national team having established himself as one of Britain's most successful players on the global stage.
After graduating from Princeton in 2023 and entering the NBA draft, he featured in the league for the Memphis Grizzlies, Brooklyn Nets, New York Knicks and Detroit Pistons and, following a standout 2025-26 campaign in the NBA G League, the 25-year-old was named Finals Most Valuable Player.
He completed another major milestone this summer by signing for European powerhouse FC Barcelona ahead of the 2026-27 EuroLeague season.
Having previously represented Great Britain at junior level, Evbuomwan now takes the next step in his international journey as the senior men's team prepares to face Switzerland away before returning home to take on Slovakia Newcastle.
The home fixture will mark a particularly special occasion for Evbuomwan, who was raised in Newcastle and developed in the Newcastle Eagles academy before embarking on a collegiate career in the United States. His senior Great Britain debut on home soil will come in the city where his basketball journey began.
Great Britain Head Coach Marc Steutel said:
"Excitement is the word that stands out the most. Tosan has played for the junior national team previously and is an exceptionally proud Brit. Everybody in the UK, and especially here in Newcastle, has followed his journey in the game with immense pride, and what a journey it has been, which is only going to continue.
"Tosan has wanted to be a part of the national team set-up for a long time. He's communicated with complete professionalism and it's all about timing based on where his journey has taken him, culminating in the G League Finals MVP last season, and now he's excited to be in Barcelona for the next step of his journey.
"His willingness and desire to be a part of this programme has never been in question. We've always wanted to get him here and find the right timing for him.
"It is a wonderful story that his first home game for the senior national team will come here in Newcastle. It'll be a proud moment for everybody, especially his family, and hopefully it gives everybody a boost moving forward.
"Being able to welcome Tosan into the group is going to be special."
Great Britain will travel to Switzerland for the opening game of the EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window on 27 August before returning to Newcastle to host Slovakia on 30 August (5pm), where supporters will have the opportunity to welcome one of the country's brightest basketball stars back to the city where his remarkable journey began.
The remainder of Steutel's squad for the August FIBA EuroBasket 2029 Pre-Qualifying window will be announced over the coming days.
