World Cup outing for GB's deaf basketball 3x3 squad
GB Deaf Basketball 3x3 are competing at the Deaf Basketball 3x3 World Cup in Zlatibor, Serbia 1-5 September.
Entirely self-funded, the squad is made up of former NBL 2 player Freddie Robinson, IMS Loughborough Basketball’s James Carter and Lancaster Lions’ Tomasz Windle, and managed by Luke Taylor, secretary for England Deaf Basketball.
Positioned in Group D, the squad have already had their opening games against Slovenia and Poland and will take on Indonesia on the 2 September.
Depending on where they finish in the group, GB will have a chance to reach the latter stages of the competition, with the top two of each group competing for one of the top eight positions and the bottom two fighting it out for placings 9-16.
Robinson, who also doubles up as the team’s strength and conditioning coach, says the team are using the World Cup as an opportunity to raise awareness of deaf basketball.
“Representation matters. For Deaf and Hard of Hearing people, seeing athletes who share their experiences competing on an international stage can be incredibly powerful. Deaf sport deserves the same visibility, recognition and opportunities to inspire the next generation as any other form of sport,” said Robinson, who experienced hearing loss at 15 after intensive chemotherapy.
“For us personally, this isn't simply another tournament. It is an opportunity to compete against some of the best deaf basketball players in the world, to represent our country, and to show what Deaf and Hard of Hearing athletes can achieve when given the opportunity to compete at an international level.”
