Solent Kestrels, Worthing Thunder progress in BBL Trophy

Team Solent Solent booked their place in the quarter-finals of the BBL Trophy after a convincing win over BBL champions London Lions.

And Worthing Thunder joined them with an 88-84 win at Manchester Giants.

The two NBL clubs will now meet for a place in the semi-finals.

Solent's 92-82 success at the UEL was billed as huge shock by many but the Kestrels went into the clash with the top-flight big guns with a 13-0 record before Sunday's NBL clash with Essex.

The first half saw the visiting side take an early lead over the Lions, up by nine points in the first quarter, and then extend it lead to 12 points by half-time.

Lions did their best in defending home court, with top scorers Justin Robinson, Brandon Peel and Jordan Whelan combining for 49 points.

But the lead remained with Kestrels throughout the remaining periods as Lions struggled to mount a comeback against the NBL side. Solent’s Travis Charles was the one to lead his team to victory, picking up a double-double of 26 points and 14 rebounds.

Jon Lashley had 21 points and nine rebounds.

The Thunder led 31-15, 56-42 and 73-64 at each break before holding off a late Giants push.

Veteran Alex Owumi had 22 points, AJ Basi 18 and young point guard Cameron Hildreth 14 and 10 rebounds with Ingus Bankevic hitting 28 in return.
