Find out more about our Slam Jam programme for between 5 and 11 years old
Slam Jam is aimed at children aged between five and 11 and is not about developing elite basketball players, but supporting children’s physical and emotional needs.
The Slam Jam programme is designed to provide a great first experience to the sport in a fun, safe and engaging atmosphere.
Slam Jam not only focuses on basketball-related activity, but it also aims to improve the physical literacy and fundamentals of movement for all participants.
Adopting the Slam Jam principles will help activators to provide developmentally appropriate basketball sessions, where players will naturally develop at their own pace.
Providing children with positive first experiences of sport and physical activity is essential if they are going to remain active for life.
Research highlights the importance of providing children with experiences of sport that foster movement and self esteem as well as motivational and social development.
Supporting children in the development of these areas will ensure they associate basketball with having fun, leading to healthier and happier children.
Slam Jam Principles
- Children are children, not mini adults.
- All children must be involved all of the time.
- Mistakes are a part of learning: they are to be
encouraged, not criticised. - Focus on involvement and game-based activities,
not technical competence or performance. - Success is not measured on the scoreboard, but
by children smiling and coming back next time.
What is Slam Jam?
Slam Jam is an action-packed, six-to-twelve week programme that aims to get children aged between five and 11 years old playing basketball for the first time.
Sessions are packed with games and activities that are based around developing participants’ fundamental movement skills.
Slam Jam is all about learning new skills, making amazing friends and of course, having lots of fun!
What is Slam Jam (Intro) and Slam Jam Play?
Our first programme is the Slam Jam (Intro), and is the first step in the Slam Jam programme. It can be the cornerstone of a club's offering as players prepare to move into Slam Jam Play.
Slam Jam Play is a new programme designed for participants who are ready to play small-sided games. New resources and lessons have been developed which use a 'game sense' approach to develop a player's understanding and appreciation of the sport.
How can I get involved?
We have two main routes into Slam Jam, one is through schools and the other is via clubs and organisations.
