BE Awards 2025: Education Institution of the Year

This outstanding basketball programme has built an incredible structure that provides opportunities for young people of all ages and abilities to engage with the game.

From introductory sessions in primary schools, to Junior Academies across multiple locations, the programme has created a clear and inspiring pathway for both boys and girls to develop within basketball.

Students benefit from elite coaching before school, curriculum-time sessions, lunchtime and after-school clubs, ensuring access to the sport at every level.

On the competitive side, teams from across the programme have achieved fantastic success, including a team from Shenley Brook End School reaching the latter stages of the U17 Dynamik Schools competition, alongside participation in the Jr. NBA competition and CBL. 

At the top of the pathway sit the elite U19 Boys and Girls academy teams, providing aspirational opportunities for young athletes.

These players receive more than 20 hours of basketball activity every week, while also giving back to the programme by qualifying as coaches, referees, and table officials - becoming role models for the next generation and creating future leaders within the sport.

Basketball England's Participation Programmes and Local Development Manager, Nick Holloway, said:

"Basketball's impact across this institution has been exceptional.

"The launch of a Girls’ Tournament at the Hazeley Academy, alongside a primary school basketball festival that welcomed teams from across Milton Keynes, many experiencing their very first basketball tournament, were just a few highlights of the amazing work going on.

"The boys' Academy team were crowned CBL National Champions in March, while the Girls' Academy reached the WEABL Playoffs in only their second season in the competition.

"Most importantly, the passion for basketball spreads throughout the entire school community, with academy coaches and players also delivering sessions within PE lessons to ensure every student has the opportunity to experience the game.

"Congratulations to Shenley Brook End School and everyone involved in this incredible programme on a fantastic achievement."

The programme's recognition continues a 10-day period where national recipients of the 2025 Basketball England Awards will be announced, covering work from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025.

Winners from across BE's 10 regions were announced across April and May, with those recipients then shortlisted to narrow down the field for each national winner.

Shenley Brook End and others will be recognised for their achievements over the coming days, leading up to another cohort of selections being celebrated with their "Services to Basketball" awards on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
