BE Awards 2025: John Sage Club Coach of the Year
Pete Charlwood is the winner of the 2025 John Sage Club Coach of the Year award.
Charlwood led his Long Road Academy team to a historic achievement, securing their first-ever league title.
In addition, he guided Cambridge Cats' NBL's Division Three Men’s team to a mid-table finish, earning them promotion to Division Two.
Following their successful promotion to the Premier League in the 2024/25 season, Charlwood ensured the U18s retained their place in the top flight for the 2025/26 season, finishing safely above the relegation zone.
Alongside his continued work with Long Road Academy, Pete serves as head coach of the Cats' U18 Men’s Premier team, lead coach for the Cats' D2 Men’s team and head coach for the Cats' U14 Boys.
His commitment is perhaps best illustrated on match days, where he has, on numerous Saturdays, coached an U14 away fixture before returning to Cambridge to lead the U18 Men’s team, followed by an NBL D2 Men’s game - an extraordinary workload requiring exceptional dedication and energy.
Basketball England's Delivery Manager for Coaching, Brian Aldred, said:
"Congratulations to Pete for his award, joining Diego Castoldi as another Cambridge Cats' winner for 2025.
"Beyond his significant coaching responsibilities, Pete has also invested in the next generation of coaches, mentoring three U18 Level 1 coaches.
"Two are now coaching in the Cambridge Cats U11 Central Venue League, while another is leading a team in the Harlow U11 League.
"All three are thriving under his guidance, a testament to his leadership and commitment to development within the sport."
Charlwood's recognition continues a 10-day period where national recipients of the 2025 Basketball England Awards will be announced, covering work from 1 January 2025 to 31 December 2025.
Winners from across BE's 10 regions were announced across April and May, with those recipients then shortlisted to narrow down the field for each national winner.
Charlwood and others will be recognised for their achievements over the coming days, leading up to another cohort of selections being celebrated with their 'Services to Basketball' awards on Wednesday, 1 July 2026.
