Silverbacks win Karl Taylor Cup in Wessex finals

Hosted at Aldershot Garrison on the 22 February in front of a record crowd, the Silverbacks masterminded an 80-71 cup victory over Slough Scorpions to take the coveted Cup. 

With five men’s divisions across the Wessex League and 50 teams featuring in the cup competition, the Silverbacks were unbeaten through five rounds before the final.

In the game itself, a slow start meant the Silverbacks were behind early on, but by the end of the first quarter they led 21-11 and never lost the lead for the rest of the game.

Slough narrowed the margin to 72-71 with two minutes to go but the Silverbacks kept their nerve and won the last two minutes 8-0 to secure the club's first ever cup win.

Callum Vines took home MVP honours, top scoring with 19 points.

Yateley Silverbacks Club Chairman and Player/Coach Pete Daines said:

“It was a historic day for the club in its 15th season.

"We’ve been in plate finals and play-off finals in the past, but this was the first time we made the cup final, so winning this silverware has been a long time coming.

"The quality of basketball in the Wessex League is higher now than ever before; I can say that as I’ve been in this league for 28 years! I have a special group of players and they all deserved the win.

“We had over 60 Silverbacks fans come and support us on the day, which made for a great atmosphere, and shows what a strong basketball community we have fostered, and continue to build across our teams.”
