Basketball England - Chief Operating Officer

Basketball England, the National Governing Body (NGB) for basketball in England is responsible for growing the sport in the most efficient, effective way, providing a great experience for everyone involved in basketball.

We need a Chief Operating Officer (COO) to be the right-hand of our thriving CEO to execute the company vision, put procedures and resources in place to promote scaling, optimise our effectiveness and efficiency in all areas of the organisation.

With your experience and talents you will work as a key member of the Executive Management Team (EMT) and you’ll be able to lead our team of high-performing professionals to be efficient, productive, and effective to create year on year success.

We have our eye out for a COO with strong leadership skills and somebody who will consistently maintain the service quality and communications expected by our members and broader stakeholders whilst adapting to embrace transformational projects and innovation adopted by the organisation and the game.

Objectives of this Role

  • Effective Leadership & Management - Collaborate with the CEO and other directors to achieve the strategic aspirations of the business whilst demonstrating excellent leadership qualities
  • Effective & Efficient Operational Performance - Translate strategy into actionable plans for performance and growth helping to implement goal setting, performance management, and annual operating planning, continually assessing and mitigating risk
  • Delivery of the 2024 Strategic Plan – directly supporting the CEO to deliver all aspects of the 2024 strategic plan. Collaborate closely with the CEO and produce reports on company operations, results, learnings, and improvement
  • Effective Resource Management – responsible for effective management and deployment of budgets and our people, building capability and productivity alongside good welfare practice and support
  • Communication – operational oversight of all external communications and promote effective internal communications to enhance clarity, speed and quality
  • Revenue Generation – to be commercially focussed and build new revenues to ensure the future financial viability and growth of the business and the sport
  • Service focused - to help shape and drive the delivery of excellent customer and membership services for enhanced satisfaction and retention of members and to acquire new members

Daily and Monthly Responsibilities

  • To provide leadership, vision and guidance to the staff, volunteers and the general membership of Basketball England and create a positive and performing culture within both the staff and sport
  • Operational delivery and implementation of the Basketball England strategic plan within set budgets, time frames and governance standards
  • Draft, implement and monitor short, medium and long-term plans in conjunction with the CEO, Board of Directors and funding agencies Aggressively manage capital investment and expenses to ensure the company achieves investor targets relative to growth and profitability
  • To provide and support an environment within which all member bodies within Basketball England are working effectively together in the spirit of cooperation and unity to develop the sport
  • Responsibility for ensuring performance management is consistent across the organisation to support business improvements and maintain a high performing culture
  • To work with the Finance and Business Director to continuously evaluate the financial status of Basketball England to ensure that proper controls are in place to secure its long-term viability and to improve Basketball England’s income generation
  • Develop operational plans to ensure the successful implementation of Basketball England’s strategic ambition:

Grow participation and infrastructure
Build winning teams and a world class talent system
Be a high performing national governing body
Tackle inequalities

Desired Skills and Qualifications

  • Previous experience working at a similar level in the capacity of Director or Chief Operating Officer
  • 5+ years’ experience in executive leadership position with Board Director engagement
  • Interpreting strategy into operational planning and effective implementation with staff teams across different disciplines
  • Effective problem solving and management of risk at strategic and operational levels
  • Relationship Management - building trust and strong relationships with a range of stakeholders internally and externally at a senior level
  • People Management: Ability to motivate, manage and lead others to work effectively using targets and appropriate delegation skills. Managing culture and organisational change as an executive leader. Previous experience of remotely managing and influencing numerous teams
  • Financial acumen to successfully managing large budgets and staff resource against projects to achieve results. Strong budgetary control and awareness of ‘value for money’ within publicly funded organisations
  • Teamworking and the ability to work as a member of a team, with an understanding of what behaviours contribute to effective teamwork

Additional Information

  • Remote working will be considered, the post holder must however be available to travel to Manchester at least once per week
  • Occasional travel and out-of-office hours and weekend work maybe required
  • Competitive salary for a senior NGB role

Person Specification

  • Enthusiastic about supporting the goals of Basketball England
  • Must have the time and capacity to attend all Board meetings and contribute fully to meetings and the decision-making process Committed to driving the sport forward in a positive direction
  • Must be willing to undertake assignments as part of a committee and complete appropriate reports to the Board
  • Financially literate with experience of business operations and commercial operations
  • Ability to communicate effectively and be committed to equality and inclusivity
  • Experience of engagement  with local/regional communities and participation
  • Must have a commitment and passion for driving diversity within the sport
