BE Awards 2024: Local League Provider of the Year

Suffolk Basketball League is the winner of the 2024 Local League Provider of the Year award.

After a number of committee changes over the last few years, the league is now going from strength-to-strength as a standout grassroots outlet for players in the East region.

With an up-to-date and well-utilised website to keep any followers informed of all scores and stats each week, members are able to bask in their three point prowess or scoring ability as they turn out each week.

Chair Chris Baker, Secretary Craig Douglass, Treasurer Cat McLean, Welfare Officer Richard Liddamore and Youth Development Lead John Yorke all play a vital role in the league's organisation and upkeep, earning them rave reviews from those involved.

Speaking about the award, East Chair Terry Reaves said:

"Suffolk Basketball has operated a senior/local league for many years. However, the past two years have seen the League go from strength-to-strength.

"This was largely due to the efforts of volunteers who collaborated seamlessly to make it an excellent local league.

"The league made improvements in all areas, including player development, and has added two teams."

Basketball England's Club & Volunteers Development Manager, Nick Holloway, added:

"The Suffolk Local League represent all that is great about community basketball, with a dedicated committee who ensure that players of all levels of ability get the chance to play the game.

"A small but mighty team, they are well-respected by all the clubs that play within the league and we are very grateful for the work they do to grow our game."

The league's recognition continues an eight-day period where national recipients of the 2024 Basketball England Awards will be announced.

Winners from across BE's ten regions were announced across April and May, with those recipients then shortlisted to narrow down the field for each national winner.

SBL and others will be recognised for their achievements over the coming days, leading up to another cohort of selections being celebrated with their "Services to Basketball" awards on Monday, 7 July 2025.
