The former London Towers Jnr. NBL player and Kent and South West representative, has been appointed as the Technical Director at Uppingham School Cairo, which is the first NBA Basketball School to be launched in Africa.
“I am truly honoured to have the opportunity to lead the first-ever NBA Basketball School in Africa," said Rogers.
"Basketball has been my passion since childhood, and to now work with the NBA to help grow youth engagement and expand access to the game across Egypt and North Africa is both a privilege and a blessing.”
Earning both his level two and level three coaching qualifications with Basketball England, as well as his level two refereeing qualification, Rogers feels those awards have opened doors for him internationally to work in locations including Washington DC, Prague, Chicago and now Egypt.
Recently, the former Maidstone Warriors man had the opportunity to help lead an NBA ‘Train the Trainers’ workshop in Morocco, preparing over 40 coaches for the launch of the country’s first NBA Basketball Camps.
“One of the highlights of my year was helping to lead a basketball coaching workshop in Morocco," he said. "It was inspiring to see how deeply basketball – and the NBA – has impacted and shaped people’s lives, and how passionate they were about giving back to the next generation.
"The coaches were eager to learn, humble, and open as we shared contemporary approaches and strategies they could use in their own programmes.
"It was a powerful reminder of how basketball can unite people from different parts of the world, creating a shared sense of connection and community.”
Growing up in England and beginning his fledgling basketball career aged 10, Rogers has used the sport as a vehicle to travel the world, now arriving at a unique opportunity in Egypt’s capital and largest city.
Working with the wider NBA Africa team to get the school programme ready for the 2025/26 academic year, he is playing an integral role in helping young players aged 5-18 to realise their potential, including year-round, tuition-based basketball development, on-court training, skill development and basketball education for all skill levels.
“Uppingham Cairo brings a legacy of excellence from one of the UK’s oldest and most prestigious private schools to Egypt," Rogers explains.
"They are committed to developing well-rounded students and world-class opportunities both in and out of the classroom – including basketball for boys and girls aged five to 18 through the NBA Basketball School.
"This programme not only creates a clear player pathway to sporting excellence but also seeks to inspire a generation to love the game and enjoy lifelong participation.”
Rogers' surroundings may be different to those he grew up in, but he remains acutely aware of the role that basketball in England played in his development, and the lessons he learned along the way to make his current position a reality.
“I am extremely grateful to Basketball England and all my youth coaches for playing such a pivotal role in my life and shaping my journey from player to coach.
"Growing up in England, those early experiences were truly formative, giving me both an outlet and a focus. They taught me invaluable life lessons that have been essential, especially while living and working overseas. Basketball England helped nurture my love for the game and set me on the path toward a career in basketball.
“I encourage all coaches – especially young coaches – to make the most of BE’s coaching pathway. It will not only help you grow as a coach and leader but can also open incredible opportunities.
"Basketball is a powerful vehicle that can take you around the world, no matter where your journey begins.”
