Croydon Cougars roar to win Globasket tournament in Barcelona

Croydon Cougars’ under-16s last week became the first boys team from Britain to win at the Globasket youth tournament in Barcelona.

Jerome Williams and Aziah Brown gave stand-out performances as the Cougars went undefeated through the pool stage, before edging a tight semi-final by a point and coming from behind to win the final.

Freddie Carpenter also came out on top from a pool of 50 competitors in the under-18s three-point contest.

Globasket is in its 10th year and features more than 4,000 players across a range of age groups from clubs in 20 countries. England U15 girls were winners at the event in 2023.

“Our success shows that the UK can compete - and win - at the highest level,” a club spokesperson said.

Meanwhile, the Cougars, who have teams in the Jnr NBL and central venues leagues, are hoping to add a girls’ team to their programme.
