U17 Home Nations Invitational: Double gold for England in Cardiff, Anyanwu MVP - report and gallery

Team England have won the U17 Home Nations Invitational in both the boys and girls competitions.

Taking place in Cardiff at the Archers Arena on the 28-29 June, England Boys and Girls went into the final day of competition knowing that victories against Wales would secure them gold.

The Girls team won comfortably, beating the home-team 130-23 and the Boys won-out 80-48.

In the presentations, Kosi Anyanwu was named girls tournament MVP, and took a spot in the All-Star 5, alongside teammate Angel Whyte.

David Idowu and Léon Heidenreich Roberts were noted as outstanding performers for England Boys and so picked up All-Star 5 honours too.

On the first day of competition, England enjoyed four wins from four. The Girls started the morning against a well-matched Irish squad, who were beating them come half-time. But a no-nonsense team talk by Head Coach Katie Lamond and reorganisation of their court play saw the girls rally and win out 53-47. Manchester Mystics' Anya Williams top scored with 13 points.

They then followed that up with a more straightforward 69-44 dub against a resistant Scotland.

The Boys - led by Head Coach Lewis Scott - had an equally challenging first game against Ireland after the tournament's opening ceremony, but pulled away in the fourth quarter to win comfortably, 86-68.

Their follow up against the Scots ended 97-74.

England U17s clashed against the Home Nations of Scotland and Wales, as well as invited guest, Ireland.

Heading up the boys' team was Myerscough's Lewis Scott, supported by St Bonaventure's Basketball Coach Charles Vuong, whilst Katie Lamond of City of Leeds Basketball Club took on head coaching duties for the girls. Her right hand woman was serial WNBL MVP winner, Ipswich's Harriet Welham.

The tournament was hosted across two venues at Cardiff Metropolitan University.

Last year, England Men's and Women's squads finished in second place after losing their opening games to Ireland in what was then the U18 Four Nations Tournament.

The revamped tournament saw the age categories realigned to identify players earlier and give coaches the opportunity to work with them over a longer period before feeding them through to GB level. Hosting during the summer time has also removed calendar clashes with the domestic seasons in each country.
