Andy Howse appointed Basketball England’s Head of Physiotherapy and Sports Science

Basketball England is delighted to announce the recent appointment of Andy Howse as their Head of Physiotherapy and Sports Science. Well-respected in the game, Howse has held a number of important positions within the sport in recent years.

Andy’s role will provide him with oversight of all aspects of the organisation’s Sports Science provision, including a wide-reaching education programme relating to Basketball England’s Player Development Model.  A primary aim within that programme will be to increase the awareness of sports science amongst players, coaches and parents. Andy will also continue to work closely with DiSE Colleges (formerly AASE) as well as prepare players for the forthcoming junior and senior British Basketball commitments.

“I’m delighted to be in this role,” Howse said. “The Basketball Development Model, in my opinion, is excellent and wide reaching. To be able to have a positive influence on players and their careers in basketball is fantastic.  Ultimately, if we can shape the career of a talented 12 or 13-year-old and see them progress over the years to eventually represent Great Britain then we have done our jobs.”

Graduating from Manchester University in 2005, Andy worked in the North West for four years before moving to live and work in New Zealand.  He returned to the UK in 2012 and started working for Great Britain’s Women's U20s plus the Senior Women’s side at EuroBasket 2015.

Combining his day job at Bristol Physio Ltd with his roles within the sport, Andy still works with the GB Senior Women’s side that recently qualified for EuroBasket 2019. He was also the England Women’s Physio for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia as the side came home with a historic silver medal.

Howse’s appointment by Basketball England will promote continuity and joint working within the sport as the 36-year-old is also the Head of Sports Science and Medicine for British Basketball, a post he was appointed to in October 2018.
