Tim Brown MBE elected to the Basketball England Board

Following the 78th Basketball England Annual General Meeting, we are delighted to announce the appointment of Tim Brown MBE to the Executive Board.

Having been involved in basketball at all levels for close to 50 years, Brown is a current Level 4 referee and tutor with decades of service as both the chair of the South Region as well as the Wessex Basketball Association.

“I’m very passionate about grass roots basketball,” said Brown following his election. “I feel my experience across many different levels of the sport will be of great assistance to the Board.”

Basketball England chair Clare Wardle said: "Tim is someone who has a lot of knowledge and exprience in basketball and will bring a lot of energy to the sport and our grass roots initiatives."

Beginning his basketball journey as a player with the Army and Combined Services, both in the UK and abroad, he also trialled for England at junior level in the early 1970s before moving on to play for the Swindon Sonics in the NBL, and Aldershot Warriors and others in the Southern League.

An enjoyable playing career led to a passion for coaching, with Brown finding success with the Army once again as well as other local league teams.

Becoming a coach led to further immersion in the game and a richer understanding of how importing coaching is to the sport. Volunteer roles also followed for the Army Basketball Association, including manager, treasurer and Vice Chair as the programme toured Europe and the USA behind the backing of the Association’s first full time sponsors, something Brown was instrumental in securing.

In the years to follow, Brown has also added officiating to his basketballing CV, rising through the ranks to become a respected referee and tutor.

In 2000, Brown was recognised in the Queen’s Millennium Honours List to receive an MBE for services to business and apprenticeships and charitable services in southern England. In 2018, he was also presented with a “Services to Basketball” award by Basketball England, acknowledging his commitment and sacrifices over the years to help the sport grow.

Clare Wardle concluded by adding: "Let's look forward to another year where we move forward together. Together we are basketball."
