2024/25 NBL Awards week: NBL Division One

The final day of NBL Awards Week is upon us for 2024/25, bringing a close to a great week of recognition.

Beginning with Monday's NBL Division Three honours, Tuesday's WNBL Division Two awards and Wednesday's NBL Division Two selections, the WNBL Division One winners were the latest to be announced yesterday afternoon.

Based on performances across the regular season, we're now at the finish line with NBL Division One, setting the scene perfectly for this weekend's Senior Playoff Finals at Manchester's National Basketball Performance Centre.

As with the awards from previous seasons, each head coach from across D1M were invited to nominate a selection of their own players that they considered in the running for each accolade.

Each shortlist was then compiled centrally and sent back to the club's involved, and each head coach was given the opportunity to allocate their votes across this year's shortlist (with teams unable to vote for their own players).

A first place vote was worth three points, a second place vote was worth two points, and a third place vote was worth one point, and the recipient with the highest number of points was the winner.

For Player of the Year, Team of the Year and British Team of the Year, coaches were given five votes to distribute rather than just three.

Note:

  • Bristol Hurricanes and Worthing Thunder did not return voting forms.

Wilson Player of the Year

Adding to his NBL National Cup Final MVP award in January, Reading's Justin Hopkins is the 2024/25 Wilson D1M Wilson Player of the Year.

The Rockets, who will chase more glory in the NBL1 Playoff Final this weekend, provided the main challenge to eventual league winners Hemel for much of the season, and Hopkins led the Berkshire outfit with an impressive 19.5PPG, good for sixth across D1M.

Adding in 4.4RPG, 1.9APG and 1.5SPG, Hopkins also hit an impressive 54% of his shots this season to drive the Rockets forward.

Wilson Coach of the Year

After helping guide Loughborough to fifth spot in the regular season, Riders' Will Maynard is the Wilson D1M Coach of the Year.

In the mix for the post-season throughout the campaign, Maynard has helped get the best from his roster after they sported the best defence across D1M this year (79.0PPG allowed).

The play of young forward Victor Ndoukou has been a bright spot, with the likes of Michael Joiner, Justin Hedley and U19 Player of the Year Edward Onyia also producing solid campaigns under Maynard's watch.

D1M Team of the Year

MVP Hopkins automatically slots into the D1M Team of the Year, making his return after earning a spot in this side with Newcastle in 2023/24, and he's joined by a familiar face in the form of Reading guard Mitch Clarke (17.8PPG, 6.4APG, 1.5SPG).

Loughborough forward Victor Ndoukou (20.0PPG, 8.2RPG) finished third in the league's efficiency charts and was lights-out this year for the Midlanders.

American Adrian Scarborough (18.5PPG, 10.8RPG) also gets the nod, with the MK becoming one of just three players to average a double-double across 2024/25.

The five is rounded out by Canadian league winner Matt Ellis (19.5PPG, 8.1RPG), with Hemel's 6'8" forward closing his debut NBL season with worthy recognition.

British Team of the Year

Ndoukou and Clarke both slot into the league's All British five, and they're joined by Essex Rebels' Luke Busumbru (14.2PPG, 5.8RPG, 6.9APG), who earned a spot in this line-up a year ago, as did Clarke.

Forward Emmanuel Kanwei (15.7PPG, 7.8RPG) makes it an Essex double up, whilst Reading's Victor Olarerin (16.1PPG, 3.8RPG) rounds out this year's five.

Defensive Player of the Year

There's more love for Reading Rockets as guard Zain Poorman swoops in to claim the D1M Defensive Player of the Year award.

The former Solent standout collected 4.8RPG to go with 1.6SPG, routinely guarding the Rockets' perimeter against some of the league's best guards.

No doubt much of Poorman's defensive output went unnoticed on the stat sheet, but Reading did own the league's fourth-best defence in 2024/25, allowing just 80.5PPG.

U19 Player of the Year

After logging an impressive 23 minutes of action per game for Loughborough Edward Onyia has been singled out as the league's U19 Player of the Season.

Averaging 9.2PPG and 6.1RPG across Loughborough's playoff-bound season, Onyia helped his side lock up the #5 seed as his side's fourth most used player across the campaign.

The future is clearly bright for the young forward, with COTY Will Maynard continuing to help Onyia explore his obvious potential.

Best Game Day Experience

Ending Essex Rebels' back-to-back run, Reading Rockets have claimed D1M's Best Game Day Experience award.

Lodden Valley is credited with having a great atmosphere for fans, with a top game day offering both on and off the court.

Regularly packing the bleachers and providing an excellent environment for D1M basketball, the Rockets were a standout choice for voters across the league.
