In 2022, Basketball England, Birmingham City Council and Sport England announced a project to renovate and enhance 17 basketball locations across England's second biggest city.
Part-funded by the UK Government through the UK Shared Prosperity Fund, the majority of the courts have a distinct purple and grey colourway painted to pay homage to the Birmingham 2022 court at Smithfield, where England won 3x3 gold and silver medals.
So far six courts have been finished and launched back to their local community, including:
Here are the courts launched this summer:
"It's has been an honour to work with our partners to get the final stage of this project over the line and deliver on 17 great spaces to play basketball.
"Winning England's first-ever basketball gold was such a brilliant achievement and I am glad that it is part of my basketball story, but the legacy of that historic moment was always going to be more important. Cities across England need basketball courts that are fit-for-purpose and safe to cater for the ever-growing population of basketball players out there - and shape British basketball stars of the future.
"If we are to keep growing basketball success in this country, then we must provide facilities and get people active and enjoying their sport - the B2022 legacy project shows what's possible when partners come together to achieve a common goal.
"Anyone interested in seeing the courts as they are launched back to the local basketball communities around Birmingham are more than welcome to attend the activation events."
BE and its partners have made the significant financial investment to bolster the basketball infrastructure in Birmingham to increase grassroots participation opportunities in both the 3x3 and 5v5 formats of the game and so that the outdoor courts can be enjoyed for generations to come.
The legacy will also form part of Basketball England’s #ProjectSwish campaign, which was launched in 2019 to improve and promote local spaces to play outdoors.
