3x3 at the Tokyo Olympics: The 16 teams going for gold

After over a year of waiting, we know the 16 teams - eight men’s and eight women’s - who will be going for gold at the Tokyo Olympics next month.

The first 14 teams were determined through the FIBA 3x3 rankings and the Olympic Qualifying Tournament and the final two were sealed this week in Hungary in front of a passionate, packed crowd.

After two days of elite competition at the Universality Olympic Qualifying Tournament, Italy and Belgium earned the final Olympic spots for the women and men respectively.

The qualifiers are in the book and we now know the field. Here are the teams going to Japan and how they got there.

The 3x3 competition at the Olympic games will take place from July 24-28 at the Aomi Urban Sports Park. 

Team England

Team England will take part in the inaugural 3x3 event at the Birmingham 2022 Commonwealth Games next year.

England will prepare players in collaboration with Great Britain, with GB entering teams made up of England players in two tournaments this summer.


5v5 at the Olympics

The men's 5v5 basketball event will take place from July 25 to August 7, and the women's from July 26 to August 8.

With a new format that has 12 teams drawn into three groups in each tournament, the top two national teams from each pool, and the two best third-placed teams, will advance to the quarter-finals.

The men's tournament already has USA, Spain, Argentina, France, Australia, Iran, Nigeria and Japan. Four teams that win FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournaments (June 29 to July 4) in Victoria (Canada)Split (Croatia)Kaunas (Lithuania) and Belgrade (Serbia), will complete the field.

The Olympic Women's Basketball Tournament field looks as competitive as it's ever been with all 12 teams already known. 

The teams are: Korea, Serbia, Canada, Spain, Nigeria, Japan, France, USA, Australia, Puerto Rico, China and Belgium.
